Shopping highs and lows

One of my most dreaded scenarios:   You just got paid so you head to the store to do some damage with the money burning a whole in your pocket.  A couple hours later you leave empty-handed.  This is exactly what happened to me this weekend.  I headed to Target with full expectations of overdoing it, similar to this summer, but it just wasn't in the cards. There were a couple cute pieces, but the fit was off and I just wasn't excited enough to justify purchase. Days like this are frustrating. My answer is usually to re-focus in on my favorite pieces to create and recreate power outfits. Never settle for something less than your expectations--for the sake of your wallet and your confidence!

Conversely, when funds are running low, everything looks great in the dressing room and you want to buy everything you see.  This is the true test of self-control, and I tend to fall victim often.

This amazing cashmere sweater was one of those situations. During the seasonal closet swap, I committed to buying more high quality items, even if it means spending more. Soon after, I was looking for a meaningful gift for my best friend when I came across an Everlane ad featuring transparent pricing for this $100 cashmere crew.  I found the honesty of how the pricing breaks down and the true production cost very refreshing.  I've been wanting to purchase a cashmere sweater, and this heather grey color was perfect. I ended up buying one for my bestie's birthday and one for me.  I failed the self-control test, but gained a lovely sweater.

I paired my new cashmere sweater with this deep burnt orange skirt.  The color combo is one of my favorites for fall.  If I had thought of it sooner, I would have planned this outfit a day earlier--Halloween!  The height of the boots helped offset how mini the skirt is.  I considered booties, but that would have been a lot of leg.  All three pieces together warrants power outfit status, and I'm betting you'll see this one again throughout the cold months.

There are many highs and lows in shopping, but that's what makes it so exciting and ever-challenging.  Whether online or in person, enjoy the good days (but not too much) and embrace the not-so-good shopping days by re-focusing in on the pieces you already love.
