The closet swap: four things to toss

I always find swapping my summer and winter clothing to be a very therapeutic experience. Twice a year I get to hit the reset button to start fresh with a new set of outfit options and purge anything taking up unnecessary space in my tiny city apartment closet.  Below are four items I'm tossing to make room for new clothes.

#1  Toss the pilled and pulled sweaters that have seen too many winters. So many of my sweaters fall into this category and it's because I've always bought cheep and didn't care for them properly through washes. This time around, I'm buying for quality (and will clean properly), like my new cashmere sweater in light grey from Everlane and my lace up sweater by Bardot.

#2  Say goodbye to those basic, boring work dresses you bought when you got your first big-girl job. I have a collection of dresses that I bought at H&M when I entered the corporate workforce.  They were go-to business meeting attire prior to my epiphany that I can be professional while still having fun with my wardrobe. I've held on to them for years, but it's time to level up and part ways. If they were more classic styles and higher quality, I would hold onto them, but not the case with these old timers. Instead, I'm more into pairing skirts and blouses that play with pattern, color, layering and cut.  I'm not against classic dresses--I'm always looking for quality and flattering cuts.

#3  Part ways with salt-stained and holey shoes. I wear shoes hard, especially with all the walking that a New York commute demands. I try hard to take care of my more expensive boots and heels. However, those that I commute in need replacing frequently. If you adore your shoes and want them to last, carry them! I tote my shoes the vast majority of days. I even carry some flats that are extra special to me or hurt my feet after long distances.  These green suede Chloe booties are one of my most precious pair. I never commute in these babies. This season's question: buy the Stuart Weitzman Grandiose booties I've been swooning over or opt for a safer, cheaper more classic pair like Cynthia from Steve Madden?!  In other words, passion vs. practical!

Letting go

Letting go

#4  Let go of those summer pieces you held onto all season and never wore. The items you've had for multiple summers and haven't found a reason to wear need to go. Toss them now, rather than have them take up room in storage.  When you swap again in the spring, you're already starting from a clean slate.  For me, that's a couple of maxis, too short shorts and some of my strapless dresses I've had for years. This summer I preferred more midi lengths and off-the-shoulder looks.

It feels good to have some empty hangers.  Even better, it's time to go shopping for new items to fill them!
