Second Wear is the Charm

This outfit is one of those creations where the pieces came from totally different circumstances and just fit.  When I looked in the mirror I just felt wonderful.  The last time I was this excited about the perfect outfit coming together it immediately became one of my favorites.  In fact it was my choice for “outfit I would wear over and over” in my 2016 roundup.  This outfit has favorite potential as well.

It didn’t occur to me until I was halfway through the work day and knew I wanted to write about this special outfit, that I realized it was the second time I was wearing each of these pieces. In each case the first wear wasn’t very spectacular.

I wasn't really thrilled with the first wear of this flouncy black skirt. Based on sizing and fit, it was my size, but I thought it looked too small in photos. I almost tossed it with my last closet clean out, yet thought perhaps it wasn't the skirt, but what I wore with it.  In that case the tight skirt and the tight-fitting turtleneck was not the best combo.

I fell in love with the unique details and flattering fit of this military-style blazer in the store, but I had a hard time creating outfits around it. The first time around I went with all black to make the jacket the centerpiece. It was good, but it wasn’t great.  For the next wear I knew I wanted to experiment a bit more.

I had been looking for fun, graphic tees I could layer with blazers, cardigans and jackets for a fun, dressed-down look. When I saw this one, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I love the watercolor-like illustrations, and I dream of going to Paris one day. The first time I wore it, I paired it with an oversized boyfriend blazer. I craved something a bit more structured to show off my Paris tee.

Turns out, second time's the charm. By the second wear, I’m familiar with the fit and wear it with confidence.  I knew I wanted to wear the tee with a more structured jacket.  The skirt needed a looser fitting top.  The jacket needed to be pushed past it bounds.  The result is fun, flattering and makes me feel fantastic.  Just think, by the third wear it’ll be like greeting old friends.
