Socks and Heels

If my feet are cold, it’s game over.  My whole body turns into an icicle, no matter how many warm layers I have on.  This means that I sometimes forgo super cute heels in favor of shoes with more coverage to avoid the deep freeze.  The socks-with-heels trend is the perfect resolution!  I still get to wear my favorite heels and my feet stay warm.  That’s a win-win.

I first saw this trend a while back but was hesitant to try it myself.  I ran into a couple obstacles as I attempted this look:

  1. Cute socks to wear with heels were harder to come by than I thought.  I actually tried out a textured pair of trouser socks, in addition to these ankle length thin black pair.  I preferred the textured, thicker fabric, but the ankle length of this pair by Maizi was a much better fit.  Now that I have one wear under my belt, I feel I could break out of the black and try something more fun--designs, brighter colors?!
  2. What’s appropriate to pair with a sock-with-heels combo?  It’s equal parts dressy (heels) and casual (socks).  I attempted to focus on a more casual outfit that could be upgraded with a cute heel.
  3. What heels look good with socks?  Short answer:  with the right socks, all of them!  I find my feet slide a bit more in socks, so I went with a shoe that has a strap to ensure I wouldn’t step out of my shoes.  I haven’t attempted a peep toe shoe just yet, but Sarah Jessica Parker is slaying in this peep-toe-crazy-tights combo.
  4. I had to wait for the perfect weather where it’s not too cold for full tights but not too warm to go sans socks.  Knowing it was going to be a rare 60-degree day in November, I had to use this tiny window.  Unfortunately, it rained throughout the entire day.

Now that I have one wear in the books, this isn’t so scary!  It’s actually wonderful to have warm toes! The best part about the socks and heels trend is that I already own the more expensive half. Find a cute pair of socks that will match well with a favorite pair of heels that are already in your closet. For less than $20 a new look is created and wear time for your heels is elongated into colder months. This may be one of my favorites trends ever. I paired outfits from my own closet with cute socks I found-these are now on my Christmas list, for sure!

To wear with a plaid button down and skirt outfit, I choose this polka dot pair by LissKiss.  The shoe is extra fancy, but the sock adds a touch of casual to daytime wear.  Available on Amazon for $6.99

These socks add a touch of sparkle to a somewhat plain ensemble.  I love the pairing of these ankle strap pumps and Free People socks. They can level-up any outfit.  Available at Nordstrom for $12.00.
